My There Beach House For Sale

Frisky_103_1

My Beach House For Sale!
http://webapps.prod.there.com/items/view?ItemId=704292

Auction ID 704292
No Reserve
14 days
Original purchase date:12-24-02 12:02 am

I love my house and I love my beach and I love my neighbors; I just don't play There anymore and the rent is due in relentlessly each month. Much of my time spent in There was goofing off on the beautiful beach in front of my house. This Hermit street is almost unknown...there might be 10 houses on it total, and only 5 of those are on the sand. It looks out into the same bay as Crab Rock. I almost thought this beach was nicer than the new ones on Motu, simply because it is much sunnier...there is minimal fog and the sand is bright. There are one or two other beaches on Ootay, but they are packed and over-crowded. Hermit beach is truely made for private hermits.

I don't know if I have ever told the complete story of how I got the house...here goes :)

In early beta, all the houses were gone and there was no way to get one. I found this beach, and I wanted to live there no matter what. At the time, I think the top price paid for a house was around 60k. I emailed everyone on Hermit beach and asked "Would you sell your house for (corrected this from when I found originral story...it was 100k T$ or $60 US)." People thought I was crazy since no one had paid that much for virtual crud in There yet. A few months later the market went crazy and that price was considered cheap. After I emailed the 5 current owners...2 wrote back and said "ok, I'll sell". Mary Poppins and I bought houses right besdie each other! It was so cool. Cytra of There In Person now owns Mary's house. :)

At the time there were no deeds. We had to do it the old way where you delete ownership and regrab it fast in auctions. Mary's house worked, in the middle of my auction, some girl grabbed my house. :( I thought I was out $60 and was so completely sad. The girl showed up luckily and we pleaded with her...she was kind and gave the house back. I think I plopped a brick when I saw my house go to someone else. lol

The beach is a great beah for buggy jumping. Many of the old There Frisky stories were recorded right in front of the house on the beach.

More stories and a few more pics of it at So There.

This is one of the rare times you can snag a beach house, at auction, no reserve. Catch a tan, surf the waves, and enjoy your new beach home! This is a 14 day auction. I am very curious to watch it unfold since the housing market has been so slow and people always ask for insane reserves. I hope the auction is popular. :)

Half-Life 2 Is Hella Good
Run! Don't walk; get your copy now. This is the best game evah and really is fun. It is not a long game and you can crank it out in a week or less if you are addicted. :) The levels are stylish, entertaining, puzzling and fun. This game just does many things well. Already the company has leaked that they are working on Half-life3 and Alyx will be the star.
http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/567/567971p1.html

You can buy and download HL2 right from Stream if you have a fast connection.
http://www.steampowered.com/

Here is an interesting article on Doom3 vs Half-life2. I echo the reviewers comments. While Doom3 was visually stunning and the sounds were amazing, it lacks the fun of HL2. Doom3 makes a major error when choosing to have the whole game be played in the dark with a flashlight...this sucks the fun out of a game that could be been more fun.

There Price Increase Rumored To Be Pushed Back
Many Thereians were plopping their pants this week when There Inc revealed its plans to increase most prices for submissions and auctions. I don't have all the details and I am too lazy to check facts and figures but I've heard they wanted to raise all wholesale prices, often by 100%, and raise submission prices by up to 500%. I've also heard that designers would not get one item free on a new submission.

As an outsider looking in, I can only see two possible reasons for There Inc to do this. Please note that I am pulling these reasons out of my ass and they are not fact, just conjecture, which often makes for the best gossip and rumors. Tee hee ;) My guess is that There Inc wants to reduce staff internally to once again cut costs on a sinking ship. The submissions and auctions have to be labor intensive...if you can cut two staff members interanally, you can save the company probably $100,000 a year. How can you reduce the workload of submissions and auctions? Raise prices through the roof. This is my best guess as to what is occuring and why. My second best guess is that Baloo is attempting some sort of economic trickery that few people believe will work. I can only see this move drastically reducing new products and listings. Some of the most fun you can have in There is desinging and people will simply stop as the costs get too high.

It's was suggested that the DAB somehow wanted these increases...I have yet to meet one DAB member that is not violently opposed to these price increases...why the hell would anyone want their cost of goods to go up? An economist might try to argue that it would reduce competition...pfffff I don't buy that line of reasoning...the top designers already have massive market share.

I've heard through the ninja rumor mill that the price increase will now be pushed back until Feb05.

World Of Warcraft Launches!
Cytra reminded me to add this today! WoW is now open for business and is very popular! This game rates very high and I know many people wanting to play it. It is currently holding the #1 spot at amazon, which shocks me since I thought for sure it would be HL2.

City Of Heroes Announces Upgrade 3!
I've never seen a game company release so many content patches so quickly. It is awesome. Whimsy found this story on So There
http://www.gaminggroove.com/article.php?id=21

Here are some of the new things:
Player Vs Player Arena
Level 50s can create the alien Kheldians
Balancing of Players

Respec and Power Pools

Respec and Power Pools
I've attempted the city of heroes Respec mission approximately eight times now and succeeded twice. I have a few new opinions on the Power Pool sets that might come in handy if you are respecing.

Speed: Super Speed and Hasten
These are still the backbone of my build. I can't imagine not having them...super speed allows you to fight, buy, sell, search etc, faster than every other travel power (except in rare worlds like TV and Boomtown). Hasten makes everything recharge faster. I still consider these almost manditory.

Leadership: Maneuvers, Tactics, Assult
I have to say that I don't like the leadership powers. There are two drawbacks with these powers...1) they take about 10 seconds to turn on all three. This really sucks when they are knocked off in battle, or you run out of end, or you use inferno or an AoE that turns everything off and 2) they suck endurance too hard. All three are endurance pigs when combined. These three powers are not horrible, but I hate the slow turn on times and the endurance drain seems too high for my liking to run all three.

Fighting: Tough Weave
These are not bad, but you have to take boxing or something to get to the third. Endurance use is not bad. Turn on time is slow. I don't mind these but I don't like them that much.

Concealment: Stealth
I still pee my panties for stealth. More of the bad guys see through it now but it still rocks and doubles as defense. The other invis powers aren't great. Phase shift can be used as a great "save my ass" thing if you think about clicking it early enough. Grant Invis can help on missions. The key one is stealth combined with Super Speed.

Leaping: Combat Jump, Super Jump, Acrobatics
Wow! These are pro-level black ninja. Combat jump is not for jumping! You slot it for DEF and I really like that you click it and it is on...no delay. SuperJump is perhaps the most fun travel power. Acrobatics provides additional custom defense and only needs to be one slotted.

Fitness: Health and Stamina
How on earth did I play 40 some levels without this power pool? I can't believe how effective these are and how much more fun they make the game. Because I did not have these, I was constantly monitoring endurance and constantly low. I had to slot everything and anything with endurance reducers. I would take this with every character now. It is really manditory. Starley told me to take this early on and I had too many other things I wanted and I didn't want to committ to 6 levels of griding to get all 6...but now I see you have to. You need to have health and stamina. They make the game so much more easy and fun. They have increased my bub rate, with some other respec changes...by approx 25%. I just did a bub at lvl44 in an hour...something I haven't done since 30s.

The Big Four
My new favorite power pools are then
Concealment
Speed
Jummping
Fitness

You end up with some nice defense.
You end up with two travel powers.
You end up with endurance and health.
You have some invisibilty.

You might consider some or all of these power pools if you respec.

There's Will Harvey Launches IMVU

What The?!
Cytra warned me that something was playing with my spikes. Oh My! Yay! Thank you Cytra for the new Grizzly Bear! Cytra knows that back in TSO, I had the Grizzly Bear Saloon and loved a good chainsaw-carved grizzly bear. I did about 100 searches on Sims Secrets and can't find a good one of my Saloon. Drat. I'll have to go through those some time.

Will Harvey's Next Ninja Move
Sassy Sid found this hot hot news in the forum. IMVU is this slick new IM client add one. You can use it with Yim and MSN and ICQ etc, and it makes the chat into avatar based chat. The product is in early beta. Here is the website
http://www.imvu.com

Have you seen this designer before? Or maybe this one? Notice who owns the domain. None other than Will Harvey. I think this could be a hit. Most people chat and chat does not have a short lifespan of a game. But, will you hit critical mass of distribution...like will you get enough downloads to make it work? I don't know. Starley and I gave the beta a try and we were in tears we were laughing so hard because it was so buggy that funny sentences kept repeating. Try the beta and see what you think. It is all going to be designer based income. There is a porn area! Yay! If you design for There, you can now design for IMVU.

One thing that already bugs me is the website speed. I don't know why, but Harvey's websites all suck for speed. I don't think it is his ISP. It must be the xml calls or something since I just don't understand why There auctions and this new site suck for speed! Maybe because it is so secure? I don't know but this has to be fixed.

Twiddler, Face Down, In the Dirt
I went on my first Sewer super mission where you have to beat up momma hydra who makes krakens. This is a death mission but hella scary and fun. There are 3 stages...kill 150 ritki in the abandonned sewers and then one person gets back to contact...it totally helps if you have a team member with invis and tp. Then go into the secret entrance and down a scary circle pit room and grab 8 secret weapons...you each want one. Again, invisibility for team is key here. Then jump to the bottom and beat up some hydra. Then you get to beat up the hydra's arms, and then her. We never even got to her. At the end, everyone on the team had 70,000 - 150,000 debt. LOL Eeeep! If you win you get a secret tricky enhancement.

WoW Stress Test Started

Check your email, you can now create a World Of Warcraft account, then create a character and log on! Smooches tipped me off to it and we were both able to create. This only works if you got a gamespy key.

CoH Grinding

CoH Tip No.6 - Confessions Of A Grinder
It's my last day for CoH blab so I thought I would do my top20 tricks. Today's screenshot was taken 10 seconds before I tripped and fell off the crane, into a pile of purple and red bad guys who quickly spanked my ass. LoL I was so embarrassed for falling that I ran to the hospital. haha.

No.1 Inspirations
For some reason, we all stop using inspirations around level 12. inspirations work! If you aren't that tough, buy more damage, if you burn endurance, buy lots of blues. Inspiration helps any player do better, especially when soloing.

No.2 Be Picky About Targets
I've joined a lot of hunting teams that are "Kill! Kill! Kill!" When you kill every group of badguys that you meet, you are most likely not maximizing xp. You will make way more xp per hour of you are selective and picky. Some badguys take forever to kill like paragon protectors and some freaks. Some villians are way to tough and some are way too weak. Find the villians that you like to beat and the ones that are good XP. You do not have to kill everything on the road...it's ok to jog more and look around for a few seconds.

No.3 Small Teams
I really like small teams. Try some 2,3 and 4 man teams and I think you will see your pink XP bar grow a little faster.

No.4 Be Picky About Missions
If you love scenic beauty, then take that Circle Of Thorns missions from hell, but if you like xp...don't! :) You can be selective about missions. Only take the missions you enjoy.

No.5 Find a Strategic Contact
Cities become a lot easier when you get a contact in a key location. A contact is really helpful since they can sell you inspiration! They will also sometimes sell you TOs. At higher levels, the contacts like Serifina, sell you SOs and buy TOs DOs and SOs. Contacts can help you level faster because they save time by providing these services. When I find a contact in a spot I want to hunt, I do all their missions to open up their store...this makes future xp gains easier since I can now buy blues and green, and have way less down time.

No.6 Loops
For every city you can make up small hunting loops. You don't need to jog 100 miles! Here are my three favorite hunting loops in Bricktown as an example. I wend from lvl 28 to 38, almost exclusively in Bricktown.

No.7 One Bub A Day
The best way to level fast is being consistant. Try to stick to a daily plan. My plan is one bub or dot a day. Every 10 days you level, but at the lower levels you can do two bubs a day pretty easily. I also find its easier to grind when you get to 7 out of 10 and can usually finish a level that day or the next. Set a reasonable daily goal and the levels go by steadily.

No.8 Timed Missions
Remember you can always take a timed mission and not do it, and still make a little XP when it times out...kind of a bonus. :D

No.9 Toss Enhancements
Don't be scared to throw away enhancements when you begin to waste time selling them. As you go up in level, eventually TOs are not worth the time to sell unless you have a contact close...toss them and go for all DOs once the DOs start dopping on your regularily. Once you hit the mid 30s, it's even time to start thinking about tossing DOs as you go for all SOs in an effort to manage time better.

No.10 Minion Bowling
If you can get AOE weapons or travel with people that have them, minion bowling is often the fastest XP.

No.11 Power Pools
My favorite power pools continue to be Hasten, Super Speed and Stealth. Consider these powers for your build. They make fighting easier and will help you level faster.

No.12 Defense Works
Think about adding 2-3 defensive powers to your build and you will die less often. Stealth, Combat Jump, Maneuvers, Tough and Weave are all good defensive powers.

No.13 Avoid The Temptation To Re-Roll
We all make mistakes in our builds...don't sweat it. One or two bad choices means nothing in the long run. You don't have to be perfect. Re-rolling can set you days or weaks behind. Learn to use the powers you have. I can't tell you how many times I've choosen a new power and then thought "omfg this power sucks turds!" and then in a week or two...I love that same power. I took fire ring and hated it...now I use it constantly. I just got Inferno a few weeks ago and simply hated in...now I don't know what I would do without it. We are all insecure about choices. Many times the choices turn out fine. Often weapons need to be four or six slotted before they function properly. Sometimes we do get a crummy choice...don't worry...in the long run, three to four bum choices does not matter. We all have a few weak weapons.

No.14 Use the patrol guard
When you want to test the villians of a dangerous new area like Perez or Brick, stick near your friendly neighborhood lvl 50 patrol guard. Try a fight and then run back to them for safety. It's a good way to experiment.

No.15 Always Turn Left
If you are not sure how to solve a map, use the always turn left technique and you will never go wrong since you solve the map in a logical manner with this method.

No.16 Try a Recharge Reducer
One enhancement that is often forgotten is the recharge reducer. Try one of these on all your weaons and I think you will be pleased with the results.

No.17 Sell Enhancements at the correct origin store
By selling at the correct store, you make more money. The exception to this rule is when you would normally toss an enh but see a store close by so you can quickly sell to grab fast cash rather than toss.

No.18 Read the Official Forum
the official forum is helpful. It is super busy and I use it every time I want to choose a new power now. Maybe you are considering power A vs power B, check out the coh forums and you will find tons of info that will help make your decision. Most questions can be answered in the forums.

Np.19 Talk Before a Fight
Some teams never say a word to each other. I prefer teams that talk a little strategy and have a plan. Simple things like "lets all sniper boss first" help the team know what to do and then disappointing deaths are avoided.

No.20 Combine the Best Enhancements
When you are turning a regular enhancement into a + or ++, buy the best one allowed. It seems pricey, but will combine more often than the cheaper one which fails at a level which makes it more expensive.

Those are my Frisky CoH Tips. I hope they are useful and entertaining.

CoH Missions

There are many types of missions in CoH, some are more fun than others; some are more xp than others. Today blab is about

Missions By XP
Three Other Ways To Do Missions
Always Turn Left Technique

Missions For XP
Here is how I rate missions from worst to best

CoT Caves and 5th Caves
Circle of Thorn and 5th caves are beautiful and adventurous missions, but they are the lowest for XP due to the difficult winding and massive structures of the caves. The early CoT missions aren't too bad, but the latter ones are hell. Yes they are very pretty, but when you have to find 16 books in a labyrinth and can't find the last one, it becomes very frustrating and time consuming. My advice is to avoid these missions if you like xp, take them if you like pretty scenery. You never have to take a mission from a contact...they are all optional and eventually as you level, that contact will offer you a new contact with different missions, even if you haven't done his/her misisons.

Spaceships and Office Buildings
These missions are in the middle. The layouts are not as bad as caves, but these can be three levels tall and each level can have multilevels. It's easy to miss a badguy or a stick of dynamite and so retracing steps takes time.

Warehouses and Sewers
These are my favorite of all missions. I love warehouse missions since they are "one level". You can see the entire map the whole time and so if an errors or misses are made, it's much easier to retrace your steps. These "flat" missions are my personal favorite for faster xp.

Three Other Ways To Do Missions
Remember I talked about taking Stealth and or Super Speed? Once you have stealth, you can do missions in more ways than "beat up all bad guys and touch all items and kill boss". It just gets boring doing every mission that way and sometimes a mission is too hard and you only want to finish it. When you have stealth, you can do missions ninja like.

Find Item Missions
With invisibilty you can slink around past bad guys and just touch items. I find this to be fun because you feel sneaky. :) You don't get much XP, but you can do a mission in 4 minutes with super speed and stealth. I like to see just how fast I can do them this way.

Rescue Marge
You sometimes get a "rescue young Jimmy" mission. On these missions, you only have to kill the two badguys holding the hostage. I like to sneak in, run the map, find the hostage, take out the two and onto the next town. Not great xp, but a fun change of pace and you feel you have pulled one over on the bad guys.

Timed Missions
Here is a trick if you are sick of tired missions...just take them and don't do them. Yep. :) I take them, let them tick out and you end up with 600xp whch the clock runs out. It is like free money as you street hunt.

It's not great xp, but I find doing missions in stealthy ways makes the game more fun since it's one more option.

Always Turn Left Technique
This will save you tons of time in CoT early caves and warehouses and many maps. Agree with your party that you will map it by always tunring left. Now you might choose right, but I always go left. If you always turn the same direction, you will complete every room in like a circle loop and not miss anything. Let me make a fast drawing. Go Left! This efficiently solves a map and makes a team faster since you all know where you are going and all agree where you are going.

Notes On Earlier Tips
I forgot to mention one other thing you can do with tip pooling, again to save time...once you both have 10 DOs or TOs, tell each other what you have and then trade so you get the fewest origins...like if you have 5 magic, 3 natural, 1 science, 1 mutant, 1 tech, see if your partner has any magic...they might need the tech...trade so you both have less sell-running to do.

With regards to stealth and maneuvers, one thing that is nice about stealth is that...if you get hit and it gets turned off, its instant on and you can turn it on while you are running. Maneuvers, on the otherhand, locks your feet for 1-2 seconds and this can be dangerous in a battle.

CoH Maxing XP

Worlds Of Warcraft, Everquest2 or Guild Wars?
I have friends peeing their frilly white panties over each and everyone of these games. Blonde Hottie Faye has been waiting three years for Everquest2 and I got an advertisement for it at the movie theater last week! I think with ads in place, the game will be opening soon. EQ2 sounds like EQ1 with talking bad guys. You can already pre-order the game. Here is the contest page if you want to register but I think you need to look at the page inside with like red lenses or something.
http://clients.eprize.net/sony/everquest2/

Here is the beta page for Everquest2
http://everquest2.station.sony.com/#beta

Everquest2 has the huge backing of Sony who has had the terrific hit "Star Wars Galaxy.

Cytra and Smooches tell me they are peeing for World Of Warcraft. The warcraft series was very popular and this game is highly anticipated. What worries me a little is the lack of noise from the beta community. Hopefully we'll all get into the stress-test beta and get to test it out for ourselved. Pirate Sid and I both had currupted downloads of the beta. If this happens to you, one thing that fixed it for me was to use winzip9 beta. You can download it here.

The lesser known of the big three is Guild Wars. Sid and I believe this is going to be the surprise hit. A few of us got into the Guild Wars alpha test at E3 and that alpha test was more stable than There on a good night! ROFL. Guild Wars is produced by NCsoft and that's a good indication that it will be innovative and fun. Here are some quotes that catch my eye...

"Guild Wars takes the best elements of today's massively multiplayer online games and combines them with a new mission-based design that eliminates the tedium of those games."

"You don't have to spend countless hours on a leveling treadmill to get to the interesting parts of the game, because combat is designed to be strategically interesting and challenging right from the beginning."

"unique streaming technology forever eliminates the concept of patching a game. You don't have to wait a month for the next big patch to experience new content. Instead, the game constantly and intelligently streams new content to your computer in the background."

I like what I am reading. I really like how There was "one world", where Sims Online and City of Heros are multiple servers. Guild Wars is one world! You just downloaded the WoW game and it was like 2 fucking gigs! LoL, the Guild Wars client was tiny! Seriously, I was shocked it even ran but it did! And it downloaded elements of the game as we played. That is very sweet technology.

GW is almost available for pre-order as well
http://www.guildwars.com/preview/wpe-faq.html

CoH Tip No.4 - Maxing XP
For me, maxing XP is about not wasting time. Here are my comments and opinions :)

Groups
Hunting Vs Missions Vs Task Force
Foes and AoE
Loops

Groups
You can make XP solo-ing or in a group. Solo-ing is often boring, but can make more XP at the higher levels. Right now I just want to blab about groups. The best groups are "small" groups. The only time big groups make great xp is when you are in a group with maybe 3 levels (14 15 16) and you are the 14, or when you are in an eight man group and sk'd. Generally speaking, smaller groups are the most efficient.

The problem is wasted time. When you have eight people together, you will get far more:

gotta pee
gotta feed dog
brb beer bio
phone call, one sec
gotta sell

This wastes time and the groups ends up carrying one or two slackers or ends up standing around a lot. If someone dies, and people often die, you waste more time. Big groups are ok if you all know each other and all like hunting as a special team, but big random groups are usually hit and miss for xp. You might have the crazy "charrrrrge!!! kill kill kill" maniacs that have a team death wish, combined with the slow and calm fighting strategists. Big teams are fun and social and interesting, but they are not great xp.

Small teams are tight and fast, and bond together quickly. My favorite teams are 2, 3 and 4 players. Raizer, Starley, Snow Flurries and I used to regularily team and would go slide missions smoothly and efficienly. Small teams communicate well and work together well to maximixe fun and xp.

Hunting Vs Missions Vs Task Force
Maxing xp is often about efficient use of time.

Missions simply waste a lot of time because they incorporate

go see contact
tell group and run through two maps and a park
find door and don't die on way
fight through mission
get back through two cities to contact

this added crap and the start and end of all missions simply wastes time. Missions are a lot of fun and they are interesting, but sometimes you watch that pink bar and it doesn't move and you think "what could I do to move this bar?" What you could do is join a hunting party for a night or two and give that a try and see how you like it, rather than 100% missions.

Task Force Missions are better XP, simply because they force you to play CoH for five hours straight. ROFL :) If you forced yourself to street hunt for five hours, you would have hella xp as well. So Task Force missions are good XP, simply because the time committment. The thing I hate about TFs is again the fiddle-fucking around at the start. I've waited 30-60 minutes for a TF to get started on more than one occasion. I think too many TF organizers want 8 players. I personally believe a well oiled 5 man team does as well on a TF as a wild and wooly 8 man team. A TF can raise you up an entire level in one night during the earlier TF levels. Just becareful...if you are the weakest member of the team, try and get sk'd. I don't know the stats but I'm guessing 25%-33% of TFs seem to give up early when they get slapped on the first map. If you are the strongest member of the TF, you won't get much xp...try to be in the middle for a balance of xp and safety.

Street Hunting is often the best xp simply because there is no time being wasted going from map to map and contact to contact. You are "Go! Go! Go! Kill! Kill! Kill!". The biggest dangers in street hunting are team leaders that try to kill too-dangerous of targets. It's ok to quit psycho teams. :)

Foes and AoE
Who you attack also has an effect on xp. AOE is area of effect or point blank area of effect...these are weapons that hit more than one bad guy. More on this in a minute. You have three choices:

kill small numbers of tough bad guys
kill medium numbers of medium bad guys
kill large numbers of weak bad guys

For XP, I rank them:

1. kill many weak
2. kill few tough
3. kill medium medium

The best xp is always in "minion bowling". When you can find 10-12 minions, white, blue or yellow, maybe orange, and then get everyone ready, then hit the AOE attacks, this is great xp and you are also in less danger of dying since you are fighting weaker opponents. Almost all heros can have some sort of AOE attack. The key to AOE weapons is

they should be six slotted with lots of damage
using more than one at once helps
they need the aid of AIM or BUILD up for more damage

Attacking minions in this way helps level sooner. If you don't have an aoe attack available, the next best choice is to attack one or two higher level monsters. You can use your regular weapons to beat them down. This can be good xp, but you are at greater risk of dying, and I personally go through inspirations at a much faster rate this way.

Loops
I don't like to think too hard when I'm street hunting and so I am always trying to find street loops that I can repeat over and over. This is kind of like using the pattern in pacman. lol You don't have to boldly adventure through every street in a city when you hunt, find a 2-4 block area and run it over and over. Bad guys spawn ultra quick so there is no need to jog 100 miles. Again, the goal is to not waste time. I always loop near the tram when I am new to a city. This is safer (run to mister police drone when I'm scared) and easier to sell when I am full of enhancments. As you level, you move one or two blocks away each level. Simple loops work and your team will get faster and faster as you develop a rythm with where you are hunting.

World Of Warcraft Stress Test Beta
Word travels fast! Sidney showed me this link last night; Sid, Cytra and I all got signed up, and then I showed Smooches this am and the list was already full! I tend to think this is just their way to get you to pay the $15, but here is the info anyways....

Update! Smooches just got a key so they seem to stall people 6-12 hours. :)

WoW is about to do a beta stress test and hammer the servers with lots of people running around. you can signup for the test here or here
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/world-of-warcraft/542708p1.html
http://www.fileplanet.com/betacenter/wow/stress_test/index_open.aspx

If you get lucky, you get a key in email and can DL the client. It's massive! over 2gig and it took me 3-4 hours. The stress test is not open yet. My guess is that it will in the next few weeks or less. Check it out. :)

CoH Tip No.3 - Enhancements
Today I want to talk about enhancements:

Stores
TOs DOs SOs
Placement
+ ++ Gambling
Slotting
Tip Pooling
Tossing

Stores
Most people know this now but it's good to go over it one more time...I don't think I figured this out until about level 15...you get MORE money selling enhancements at the proper shop. You can sell enhancements at ANY store, but if you sell at the proper origin store, you get 50%-70% more money. It's worth it, most of the time, to try and sell at the correct store.

There are sites on line with maps of the stores and there is even a map hack you can install that shows you where the stores are. I use this page of maps. Now once you get up into the 30s, there are no stores and it becomes a pain in the ass. :) You can still sell at the stores in Talos, but you have to buy from an in player character. I am a mutant and so I have to buy from Penny in Founder Falls. There is a list of the high level stores (players) here. To buy and sell to these players you need to do one simple mission for them. I did all of them since I wanted more spots to sell to save time when hunting.

TOs DOs SOs
TO is traing origin, DO is dual or double origin, and SO is single origin. This may not be the correct advice, but this is how I did it...as soon as I could buy DOs, I never bought anymore TOs, and as soon as I could buy SOs, I never bought anymore DOs. The stronger enhancements are so strong that I feel it is better just to sell weaker and save up.

Players like trading with friends and some people even try to sell on the request channel. I think it's fun to try and trade with friends for the first 15 levels, but it eventually becomes a time waster and I think it is better just to haul all your enhancements to the store and sell them, keep the insp and buy what you really want since you rarely get dropped many useful enhancements. I would not recommend spamming the request channel trying to unload enhancements.

+ ++ Gambling
When you combine enhancements, they go to + and ++. A 15 combined with a 15 will go 15+ and that is really now a 16. A 15++ is a 17. When you get into the levels where you have to + and ++, you might be tempted to buy a cheaper enhancment and take a chance on it working. I've tested this a couple times and it is my experience that you will end up wasting more money by gambling and trying to save cash by going cheap. It's better to buy the most expensive enhancement and combine. If you buy a 10 to add to a 15, it will fail at rate greater than the savings you incure. You might try this test yourself. I personally find the cheapest route is to combine the best or most pricey enhancements. So if you are at 15, buy 15s, not 10s.

Slotting
There are many ways to slot powers. Here are just a couple tips you might find useful.

Endurance
If you don't have stamina and suck on endurance (like me haha), then you should probably have one endurance in all your powers that you often use. One endurance enhancement helps a ton.

Slotting For Damage
On some of your shooting and hitting powers, you might have it set up something like

1 end reduce
2 aim
3 damage

This is a great combo and works well. It really all depends on if you prefer fighting red and purples or yellows. I slot a little differently and you might want to give this a try. I prefer

1 end reducer
1 aim
1 recharge
3 damage

I really like one recharge on my weapons that I fire constantly. I've tested these weapons several ways...I think one afternoon I wasted 500,000 in insp testing everything from 6 damage to 6 recharge and various aim configs. Fast shooting weapons hit max fire speed with only one or two recharges on them. When you add a recharge into the mix, I find that I personally kill bad guys 20-30% sooner. You will drain end faster, but you are killing faster which is safer...you want to get off more shots that the opponent. Check out the top left of this screen shot and see my fireblast and flares. If you have some quick shooting weapons, you might give this configuration a test drive.

Tip Pooling
If you've worked in a restaurant, you've probably heard of tip-pooling. Instead of each waitress keeping her tips, they all pool them and divide them up at the end of the night. I like to do this in CoH! This works best when you are hunting with one friend, two max. Enhancements drop randomly and so always someone gets a bunch and others get none on any given evening. It can be fun to agree to tip pool. You each collect enhancements, then when someone hits 10, he starts to give the other person one or two at a time until they are at ten. He/she gives them the lowest ones in his/her collection.

This helps your small team have more fun and bold. This also saves time. I am huge on saving time when trying for xp and big time waster is "gotta sell". If you all sell at different times, it really slows things down. When you Tip-Pool, you all sell at the same time and everyone is happy with a 10 load of enhancements.

When you get higher in levels, you might decide to toss all TOs and only go for DOs. When you get higher still, you might go for only SOs. When I get to team with Starley in PI, we might agree on a SO run. We toss all TOs and DOs. Sometimes we might trade DOs at the start, just incase someone has to leave early, but then we start tossing them too until we hit the full boat-load of SOs, then off to the Talos stores. It's fun and more xp efficient to Tip Pool. :)

Tossing
I know it hurts to throw money on the street, but there comes a point when going to the store is expensive in terms of time. You will get to a point where TOs are not worth the time to sell...toss them. You will then get to a point there DOs are not wirth selling...don't be scared to toss enhancements when they become more of a hastle do to their low worth. If you are with people and sk-ing a friend, by all means, please don't toss without offering the enhancements to them! This makes them happy and you won't feel as bad tossing them away.

Now there are a few tricks you can do to avoid tossing...this is the time to sell at the wrong store or two the wrong contact. If I have to toss but I am near a store or contact, I will sell. You get less for them, but you get value and you don't waste time. I used to do this constatnly in Brick. Serifina is near the hospital and the scientific guy who sells SOs is down deep in the redzone. I used to run from Serifina to him, sell all TOs and DOs, run back and repeat until I had the pure ten SOs and then off to talos. This way you waste no time and you make some change too.

CoH Defense

I remember back in Lineage2 beta when I was teaming with Sassy Sid; she was healing and I was fighting. After getting my ass kicked three times, Sidney said "Twid, you are as weak as a little girl." What Twid was saying was' "dude, you need some defense!" In City Of heros, I forgot about defense for the first 25 levels and was all "more damaga power please!" Finally I woke up and began to use defensive powers, and the fights became much easier and much safer. I wish now that I had done this from the beginning. Here are a few of the powers that will make your hero stronger and tougher. Not everyone six slots defensive powers but I like to.

Stealth
You know this is my favorite. The great thing about stealth is that you are invisible defense as a bonus.

Combat Jump
I think this is Starley's favorite power. rofl *wink*. OK she hates it. But it really is a good defensive power.

Maneuvers
Maneuvers is nice because it increases your defense AND the defense of your buddies. The big drawback on maneuvers is that it is an endurance pig and will suck you dry. I have two endurance in it and that keeps it from draining.

Tough
Makes you slightly resistant to smashing damage...man do I wish I had this.

Weave
Increased defense to melee attacks. Wow do I wish now I had this. :)

Hasten
Hasten adds defense if you slot it that way. The big problem is that hasten is so important for recharge speed that you should really only use one or two hasten slots for defense...but that is totally doable and worth it.

Three Dee I Use
Think about adding two or more of these defensive powers to your hero's build and you'll feel much tougher in battle. I wish I could go back and add them all. :) I use three of these. I have hasten with one slot for defense...I might try 2 slotting it soon. I use Stealth with 5 slots of defense and maneuvers with 2 slots of defense. Here is a screen cap.

Now one other power you might consider for defense that is handy with a small team is "grant invisibility". This does not help you but it will help a member or two of your team...first it gives them temporary stealth with is always handy. Second, it can be defense slotted.

Don't be a weak little girl like I used to be. LoL Be strong like Bull! get some Defense!

CoH Power Pools

Please note that these tips are based on my opinions and style of play. They work for me but may not work for everyone. There are many ways to successfully play coh while having great fun.

CoH Tip No.1 - Pool Powers
Yay! After 440 hours of play, I hit level 40. Weeeee. After all the hours I worked behind the counter at Steve's Technology Shack. Starley worshipped my new status for a few seconds, and then we got jiggy. CoH has been excellent fun, and for the next few days, I want to blog on some of the things that helped me get to level 40. I think some of these ideas will have you levelling faster and having more fun in CoH. I don't consider myself a power leveller, but I do consider myself and efficient player that avoids wasting time.

My first tip is one of the most important. If I could choose any three weapons or powers, the ones I am going to show you today, are the ones I would choose every time. The great thing is that they are pool powers, and so anyone can choose them. I found out about the three powers used together from some excellent guides written by early power levellers.

My favorite three powers are

Hasten
Super Speed
Stealth

Here is where you can find them.

Hasten
I would start with Hasten. Hasten makes every weapon you have shoot faster. Hasten makes all your heals and skills, recharge sooner. Hasten makes everything you own, better. You turn it on and forget about it. I used to time it but I forget the stats...I think it speeds you up 20%-30%. Hasten makes you a more efficient hero. Hasten should be six slotted. Most people six slot it with recharges. With six, it is always on. With five, it is down 5 seconds. I prefer to five slot it with recharge and one slot it with defense. Heros can never have too much defense and this is a great bonus way to get some.

Stealth
I have all four invisibilities, and the best one of the bunch is stealth. It was sadly the last one I picked! Stealth is awesome...it allows you to be almost invisible, yet you can still fight. You can get maybe 5' away from a bad guy and they can't see you. You can even touch them if you're brave and most of the time they can't see you. This allows you to:

- position yourself better at the start of a fight
- run through town hunting and not aggro
- solve boring missions fast by running to the end

Stealth should be six slotted. Since I am an endurance burner, I slot it with one endurance and five defense. Yep! Stealth is another secret cool power that helps you with your defense. Check it out, with Hasten and Stealth, now you have six defense working for you already. You will find you die less often in battle than your buddies.

There is one drawback to stealth and that is that you travel a little slower. This is where the next power comes in. Remember, these three powers all work together.

Super Speed
Travel powers tend to cause religious wars, but take my word, this is the best travel power. I have Teleport and used it from maybe up to level 25. I then got superspeed and wow...it made the game 100x more fun. Let me start with the drawbacks to superspeed and there are a couple:

- burns endurance
- small accuracy reduction
- get stuck in holes in boom town

You can fix the endurance with an enhancement. I leave super speed on all the time and I'm level 40, so the accuracy penalty can't be that horrible...I honestly didn't even realize there was this penalty until I read it today. In some cities, boomtown and a couple others, you might also need hover or tp or friends. SuperSpeed is not good in these cities, but honestly, I bet I never spent more than 5% of my time in such cities and if you go into them with a group, you should be ok if you ask politely for a tp if you fall into a hole. :)

And now for the good news...SuperSpeed rocks. You tear around cities, you hunt way faster, you sell enhancements way faster, you can solve missions that are hell when you miss something by running back faster. Running fast is really fun! The fastest travel power of all is teleport, but that is only in a wide open space! 90% of the time you are in a city with buildings, or in a map, or hunting. SuperSpeed is the fastest "practical use" power.

Now check this out...using SuperSpeed with Stealth, is almost total total invisibility. In 40 levels I have only been seen four times and I am guessing the times I have been seen are from other hero aggro. Snipers can see everyone so they don't count. Every day I run up to badguys and stand beside them to plan my attack and with SuperSpeed and Stealth, I am safe and happy.

Try these three powers on your character and I think you will be very happy with them. :) Here is a screen cap of how mine are slotted. I plan to three or four slot SuperSpeed someday. SS maxes speed out with two slots. Since I need one for endurance and stealth slows it down...I might try and four slot it on the way to 50, but you really only need the one slot for it to be hella useful.

For newer players, you don't get your travel power until I think 14, so you should take hasten before that so SuperSpeed is ready when you are.

An Alternative Route
Here is one other way you might go with the three powers. I don't consider this path as good as the one above. You could go Stealth, Combat Jump, SuperJump. SuperJump is super fun and probably the second best travel power. Combat Jump is excellent defense. The trouble with these three is that hasten is important and so I would still want to take it at some point.

I just talked to Starley who uses both fly and superjump and she said that superjump is fun, but she would take fly over SJ since its more passive and simpler to use. Starley also made a great point "2 travel powers is a good idea though". I totally agree. Once you get higher up, it never hurts to have a second travel power.

Re-Roll
You don't have to re-roll. I was teleporting my lips off until mid 20s and then discovered SuperSpeed. I had taken all the invisibilities and finally tried stealth. I think players are too quick to reroll. There are no horrible choices and there is always time to pick things in the future. :)

Juggler's With Jugs

The sexiest villians in City Of Heros have to be the Carnies. Man those babes are hot, and man those babes kick my ass. LoL. I've been to the hospital a couple times because of their hold powers. Sometimes I get lucky and send them crying for their moms. I am a few days away from level 40! Yay! When I hit 40 I plan to write a few City Of Heros tutorials here at There Frisky.

The Plane!
A couple weeks ago, Cytra showed me this awesome plane built over the island where our shacks our. The plane is huge! and fun to jump around on.

There is now Forterra
Cheyenne eluded to this in her comment earlier today...There is now under the new company of Forterra. Sidney tipped me off to this earlier in the week. Here is the Forterra Website. There seems to be following the money and I would guess that defense contracting is lucrative right now. What shocks me is that they just got another $14,000,000 in VC money, putting the total VC investment to $50M. I'm sure the $40M has been written off the books, but man, what a ton of money to burn through. The big VC this time is Jerusalem Venture Partners.

Tabula Rasa

Tabula Rasa is yet another amazing game in the pipe for NCsoft which continues to dominate the massively multiplayer sector with innovative offerings. Check out these screen caps...looks like a lineage meets star wars galaxies. Check out the engine NCsoft lineup.

Where Is HL2
No one knows and it is starting to look a little like duke nukem. EB has a sept ship date and amazon has nov. I think both those dates are BS and it might be summer next year if we are lucky.

Lineage Gets New Faces and Hairdoos
Sassy Sid tipped me off to this new Lineage update.

Nearing Level 40 In City Of Heros
Most turn-based or D&D style games quickly become level grinds, and this is happening in Lineage and City Of Heros for many of the old Thereians. I noticed players are logging in less and less. I personally think these styles games are entertaining to me for about 90 days. I started CoH in may and am at about the 100 day mark and nearing 400 hours of play and I am hitting the burnout wall. The one thing keeping me going is a level goal of 40. I believe I will hit 38 today. This means roughly 30 hours left until I can crack the elusive 40 barrier. The higher levels get harder and harder, not only because of the XP, but because you have less and less friends to hang with as most people bunch up in the levels 1-20, things get thin 20-30, and things get really thin 30-40 so it is very difficult to join teams and you end up solo-ing all the time.

When I hit 40 I will do a "Twiddler's Ninja Tricks for CoH". I have a few tips that may help you enjoy your coh play more, and level faster. I don't consider myself a power leveller, but a hero that likes to level efficiently and not waste time. Cotton Candy just started CoH! Yay!!! :) She is working her magic.

Cotton Candy says Coh Rocks My Socks!

It really is an awesome game if you haven't tried it. I would vote it top game for 2004. It gets boring after a few months like all games do, but it is very well made, very well thought out, and super fun. Check out City Of Heros if you haven't already. You can find a list of many Thereians playing coh on the blagdash matrix. If you want to blab with Thereians who play CoH, read the So There Coh forum.

Doom3 Sooner

Sims2 Soon! Doom3 Sooner!!!
Sims2 is due out this fall, but I am peeing my frilly white panties because, next week is DOOM3! Yahooooooooooo! OMFG it is going to totally kickass. If you started playing games with Sims and There, you are in for a treat. I know games like Quake3, Unreal and Half-life (first person shooters), can sound intimidating, but some of these games are made for single player...you play them alone at home. Half-life set the new standard for such games with an incredible immersive story plot. Before half-life, these games were all "kill 100 bad guys as you run through this room of crates". 'zzzz Then Half-life made a game that was deep in story telling. Doom3 is taking it to the next level. This is a game that is going to play like a motion picture. You will be the hero of a terrifying horror movie! Weeeeeee :)

If you have only seen There and Sims, you are in for graphical eye candy. First person shooters continue to set the bar higher and higher for amazing graphics. You often find yourself just walking around and looking at the buildings and walls and water.

I grabbed a bunch of pics from the doom3 site and will show you. Now some of these were tiny and I blew them up so they are grainy. Some were big and so they are huge and very crisp. I'll start with the crispy ones

Wow wow wow! Ack! I don't have enough hours in the day with City Of heros. I am trying to level to 40 so I can be done with heros. I am now at 33 and each level is over 20 hours of play. A game like Doom3 usually takes 40-100 hours. I think some of us logged 1000 hours in There. haha. In CoH I am over 300 hours. Doom3 is more of an adventure you play at home, late at night, with the lights out and speakers up loud. :)

ThereFrisky Notes
I occasionally get emails or comments asking about ThereFrisky. In the past I have posted where Frisky is headed but those posts tend to get burried. ThereFrisky is a There Inc fansite. I have debated about making it a general game site, but I prefer to start one new site per game. This keeps a fansite pure and clean. I loved There but I only play maybe 10 minutes a month now, and so there is nothing that I can really post about. Wait! Here is a pic of me and Cytra in that new slick space station like object. I will probably only post to frisky once a month at most now. Currently I play a lot of City Of Heros but I am nearing my goal of level 40 and plan to look for a new game after that. I'll probably dive into Worlds Of Warcraft, Half-life or Guild Wars when they come out. I always like to see where my friends head as well, so I hope to find a game that I can talk Sidney, Cytra, Starley, Blonde Hottie Faye and Mojo Mary Poppins into. ;) Right now I hope that I can play Half-life2 for my shooting needs and Guild Wars for my levelling needs. It will all depend what comes out and when. These are all multi-player games. I plan to play Doom3 for August. If I start a fansite for any of these games, I will most certainly post it here.

Hella Quick Bunnies

Tour Guide Sid and Tour Guide Twid decided to meet up in There and do some old school exploring to see if much has changed in the last month or two. Three big things caught my eye:

1. Elevators
2. Bunnies
3. Fog

Elevators
It seems there submissions is kinder on clipping now and so elevators and shooting tubes could be found at all the popular destinations. We found a massive cannon tube in Tyr. It had to be 10 stacked paz or more. The structure was awesome and if would shoot you high enough for like a 10-20 second freefall. Clipping elevators have always been hella fun. 'tu

Fog
Is it me or does there feel like Scotland these days? I can hear the tech programmers now:

Jimmy "how the heck can we reduce this damn lag!"
Steve "hmm, why don't we just add more fog so people can't see"
Jimmy "great idea! hella fog!"

LOL Soon the game will be so dark that you can only see a person five feet away or less. lol It continually reminds me of american werewolf in london "beware of the moors!". Its like foogy moore island. :D

Hella Quick Bunnies
The new pink bunnies are very trick. Here is Sid bouncing like 10 feet in the air with them. They look like normal pink bunnies, but they run like twice as fast as the Nikes and hop way high! Both men's and women's are in the New Releases > Test Items. The big drawback is that they are 20 large. Eeeep that is high. Why is There Inc pricing so high? I can only think of two answers: maybe as a last ditch effort to make some coin or maybe to test price elasticity in a virtual world. At $20,000 T$, these shoes now cost the same as real shoes. That is $10US and you can probably get a pair of bunny slippers at Payless for that. You can at least get running shoes.

Don Carson is Now Gone Too
The head artist behind all the wonderful artwork of There, is no longer with the company. He speaks of it in past tense on his awesome website. I hope we see some of the great creative minds behind There, re-emerge on future projects together. Don Carson's artwork is one of the things that makes There such a wonderful place.

I've alway wanted to see Survivor branch out and do a damn "Gilligan's Island" edition. Well they never did it, but someone must of had the same idea in reality TV since their is a new show coming soon based on the Gilligan's Island premise. Check it out! Get your application in by July 15. Survivor 9 starts this fall and they are already casting for Survivor 10!

GOM Gets Crooked
Sadly, GOM got taken for three large ($3,000) recently. Some asshole bought $3,000 in SWG coin and then reversed the charge on paypal. The policy on payplam favors the complainer for intangible goods. GOM has halted trading of all currency except SL. I am not sure what they can do to stop this in the future. I wonder how the other sites do it. The FBI and RCMP are now involved...I sure hope they catch the guy since this is a serious crime. This is a tricky area with all internet sites that sell intangible goods...anyone can say "I did not join; I did not buy it; I did not receive it" and then it is almost impossible for the seller to prove otherwise. I can't think of a simple solution off hand. You could limit the value of sales to prevent large fraud...you could make it so a person has to buy several times and be in good standing...like ebay does it. Even so, these never completely stop fraud, they just minimize it and sometimes that is the best you can do. I hope GOM finds the perp.

Engine Masters
I have a new summer hobby...I was selected to be one of the 50 contestants in the 2004 Engine Masters Challenge. This contest is an engine building contest. I get to get good and greasy. :) I might blog post maybe once a week to my site Pirates Of Horsepower.

The Slide
There auction revenues continue to be on a slow slide...but really this has a lot to do with summer. Most games and internet sites consider summer the slowest months. When kids go back to school, things pick up. Here is the chart from Tarah's.

There Bucks Up

T$ Up, Real Estate Down
The Therebuck has come roaring back and is very stable. Check out the numbers at GOM. My theory for this is as follows: There are few new players in the game and more older players. These older players know that you can buy Tbux from four or five sources. Players have also learnt to trust the top sellers like tbux.com and gom and so it's now easy and safe to make transactions. these two conditions are helping make for a very stable T$. Yay! :) There are less houses for auction now after the crash; the nine pages has fallen to four pages and I have seen more and more shacks under the $100,000 barrier. Now is a great time to be buying a shack in There if you've been waiting for lower prices. Here are the auction pages for deeds.

The New SpamArrest
I get a lot of spam; 100,000 spam emails a year. :) And the spam filter I use is spamarrest. I am all excited because spamarrest is redoing their site and now has the "white page". Yahoooo! So now I can type in "there.com" and all there-mail gets to me. Weeeeee :) This was such a pain in the ass before. If you hate spam and get too much of it, try out spamarrest today.

Sexy Second Life Beast

Sexy Beast
Makeup tattoo by Starley, cheetah mini-skirt by Cytra, hot legs by Twid. :) One of the interesting features of second life is that men and women can share the same clothing. Meoooow. :) I haven't played much SL, maybe an hour here or there. It's certainly a world that builders, designers, and scripters love. SL has good old fashioned lag as shown by these signs I found.

T$ On The Rise!
Therebucks recovered and then some. The crash was the best thing that could of happened to GOM! They have never had higher volume and the T$ has recovered more than I ever would of imagined. Revenue seems to have stabilized at a level.

Here is a game like Lineage that is in beta. Sometimes the download is hard to get. I played the game for like 5 minutes and it was not that bad.

State Of There Radio Address
Did you listen to the radio address yesterday? I did. I wonder if someone typed a transcript...I haven't found one yet. Gawd. I shake my head. Half the time I was screaming at the radio and half the time I was howling. :D Some of the questions had me rolling. Here comes my overall opinion on these things so please take it with a bag of salt. There Inc stated several times "we are NOT closing". I don't know if they are trying to convince us or them that. Hee hee. Where the hell do I start.

If I hear the word "community" one more time, I'm gonna hurl! ROFL If the word "community" was said once, it was said 135 times in that radio address. I know I am a cold hard numbers lad, and so I will say it again

THERE IS A BUSINESS

It's all nice and fine that There is a community and we are all passionate about it, but that does not mean a rat's ass if they are going to be around six months from now.

A business is made to "make money".
There is a business with the subscription model.
You make money with the subscription model getting more signups.

Here are the two things that catch my eye on that old Michael Wilson post:

Michael Wilson wrote:
"As we go forward we will continue to evaluate the consumer service and our ability to meet our financial goals on an ongoing basis."

What does that mean?
It means that the consumer game version of There failed. This is why There was created. The company is still alive and feels responsible for the gamer community and will do its best to float the game side as long as possible. This is why they are trying so hard to cut the costs. They need to get costs to rock bottom and then they can keep it open for us to play.

Michael Wilson writes"
"Q: Is There going to close?
A: No. The company has just received new funding and will continue to operate; only we will now be focusing most of our resources on building out our platform."

What does this mean?
To me this is horrible in terms of business! This says to me that they burnt $40,000,000, but some how they got a new cash fish on the line for a few mill more and are going to toss that money down the well too. He did not say "we made a profit and so we can continue to operate...no, he said "we found some more funding". Eeeeeek! Eeeek! This sounds a lot like the dot coms.

Michael Wilson wrote:
"There is changing its strategic direction to focus on our technology platform."

What does this mean?
It means "we are changing our direction because we did not make any money".

I don't think There is closing anytime soon. As I said before, The Sims Online was a huge money loss and it's still around. The advice at the end of the radio show was "stick together as a community and keep playing". This is bad advice and will not save the game and here is why...

You make a subscription model succeed by getting a continual new flow of players or customers. The best advice would be "get 5 of your friends to join, and get them to each get 5 of their friends to join". And that advice is very hard to do. The There player base is going to suffer from lack of new blood, and so it will dwindle. It's got a half-life. I would say that every 90 days, about half the players will disappeared and moved onto the next game. It's not that There sucks...There is awesome, but we still get bored with things in time and move onto new hobbies and games. Did you used to play Sims? Did you love it in the beginning? I did and yes, I pee'd my pants over it. TSOL had me on six hours a day every day. The community was awesome...because...it was you and me. I could not play TSOL for three minute today...it's now boring to me. It's still an amazing game. I used to play There six hours a day, but now I can only play 30 to 60 mins. I can play City of Heros three to six hours now, but in a few months, I'll have the itch to move on. This is human nature. Players will continue to exit There as they reach their personal boredom limits. Therefore the only way to keep an active community that is not shrinking, is to get a constant or growing amounts of new players. I don't know if There has this or not and There Inc seems to ignore or not understand this side of the business.

There Inc itself, I personally think is still struggling to find their niche to see if they can succeed. Once that military project runs out...what then? They need cash revenue. They are now betting on the platform. Man...this is a long shot. Who needs a metaverse game engine and how much would they pay for it? You are now competing with all the other game engines out there and there are some damn good ones. To date, no social metaverse has succeeded in a big way. Maybe they could go all industrial or business to business and use the product like NetMeeting :)) and have corporations use it to host office meetings or something.

Sneaky Dinky Submission

The Sneaky Dinky Submission
Here is a story that I almost forgot about...There Submissions allowed the original "dinky" shirt into the game. There Submissions rejected the infamous "8 equals equals Dee" shirt on more than one occasion. This would not deter the dinky ninjas. You see, my friend, Starley the frog, had a plan. She wanted to do a reproduction of an old bananna painting. I helped her with the rough vector art and she did all the finishing photoshop touches. Here I am cleaning my mantle beside the finished print. The painting came out great. It's even signed by the artist, the infamous 8==D

Is Second Life Making Money?
You know I love the numbers so let's get out the napkin and push the pencil around! Here are the bits of info we need...Subscriber numbers. In the story that hit the web huge a couple days ago about SL selling land for $500 and up, the info is given that there is 10,000 active subscribers. My source "Sassy Sid" tells me that she read or heard the staff of SL is very tight...something like 30 peeps and I am pretty sure I heard this before as well.

Revenue From Subscriptions
10,000 x $10 a month = $100,000 a month and $1.2 million a year

Salaries
30 peeps at $30k-$35k a year is about $1M

so that's a wash. They are break even on subscriptions to salary. You might then say "what about all the land and taxes!" There is only a handful of people buying islands etc. Even so, I'll be very generous and say...let's double the subscription amount and say they are grossing $2M, land and taxes and subscrions. You now have to add in...lease, server farms, taxes, workmans comp etc...$500k in various expenses and that leaves maybe 500k profit.

I'll go on record saying that I it's my opinion that second life is breaking even to inching out a small modest profit. I do not think they are taking the wheelbarrows of gold to the bank.

Is Second Life VC Backed?
I believe it is. VC again is short for venture capital. Who backs SL? They said who in the Forbes story...

Forbes writes
The company, which is backed by Lotus Development Corp. founder and high-tech investor Mitchell Kapor, has about 10,000 active players.

Now I misread this and I thought it said "backed by Lotus", but Jamie showed me that it says "backed by Lotus Founder". So I am sorry for writing that I thought IBM backed SL. One of the VCs for SL is Catamount Ventures also lists Linden Labs as one of the firms they invested in. The big backer is Mitchell Kapor and he even has a moveable type blog!

More Bla Bla On Second Life, There, And Sims
Before, I used to rate all three games different. Originally I gave sims an 8, there a 7 and SL a 6. Then I reversed and ranked There highest. After playing all three, I would now rate them all an 8. They are all very different and they all meet the niche for certain gamers. Not everyone will like each platform, but all three are technical accomplishments and all three are fun to play.

Second Life has some interesting things going on that I think might bite them in the ass down the line. You can submit a shirt to second life in seconds. There is no submission approval system...anything goes. Therefore it is the land of the junk shop. LOL This freedom is awesome but can be abused. I would say that 20% or more of the objects in SL are in violation of copyright laws. You cannot copy other people's work, virtual or real, and then sell it as your own. This is against copyright laws. There will come a point when lawyers will say...."hey! VCs are backing...time to sue! We got some deep-ass pockets and a whole pile of infringement."

If you haven't tried SL, you really should, just like if you have not tried Sims Online, you should as well. If I had to say 3 pros and 3 cons for SL, they would be:

Cons
The avies are butt ugly
The game is the least intuitive
The male to female ratio is heaviest male

Pro
The is the most open platform
The in game objects and scripting are simply amazing
The customization allowed is endless

The Other Virtual Worlds
We always hear about Sims, There and SL, but there is a whole line of of virtual worlds. These might be thought of as the B league. :D Check out some of the other worlds available at Virtual Worlds Review.

Singles and Thief3 Release Demos

Singles One Hour Demo
Singles is like really frisky Sims. :) The demo is now out and the servers are edios seem overloaded. Both Thief3 and Singles are edios. Here is the download link
http://ftp.eidos.com/pub/demos/singles/SinglesUSDTry.exe

Now I don't know if Singles license from Sims or not...if they didn't, man what copycats. They must have good lawyers. Hee hee. The game feels just like Sims. If you played Sims, you will be a natural at Singles. The big difference is the camera is totally user controllable. You can zoom in, out pan around. Here is the lovely couple I started off with. I was able to get my skirt into her frilly white panties. I only played ten minutes so far but it seems to feel "just like sims". I expect there will be some heavy petting and partial nudity along the way. ;) Check out Singles the Game again today. Both these downloads are a large 450mb.

Theif3 Demo Now Available
Thief series plays like a suspense filled horror movie! Turn the lights out and the sound up. You are a theif of olden days and you have missions. Usually they require you to get into a house undetected, knock a guard or two over the head with your blackjack, and steal some rich evil lord's gold. I started playing the game again last night and it felt great. The tutorial is well made and teachs you how to use many of your Thief tricks. You have all sorts of neat arrows like a water arrow, used to put out candles and torches. You alwo get some real arrows so you can kill a guard if you can fire off three into him before he swords you to pieces. The guards are the most fun in the game since they don't know you are there are they are always muttering and complaining about something. Here is the link to the Theif3 demo
http://ftp.eidos.com/pub/demos/thief3/T3_Demo.exe

Here is also the Thief3 website. The demo is also 450mb and both games are single player.

Fun In There

There Is Hella Fun
It's the start of summer! Happy Memorial Day weekend. :) After today I'll be slowing down and posting the major There Inc events and big game release news. I've got a few stories for today and also maybe some general comments on gaming, the internet and fun. I've played There for over a year and I'll have to say that it's been hella fun and a wonderful gaming experience. I played Sims Online for six months before that and also enjoyed it very much. Before that I played Half-Life off-and-on for three or so years. These games are now all part of me. Gaming online is great and it's only getting better. The latest figures show that the average online gamer is 29 years old! How cool is that. Women and men both enjoy the social fun of internet gaming and this trend will continue to grow. People are watching less TV and logging in more frequently.

Drama
I think a lot of players think that "drama" is a There-only experience, when really it's a mix of human nature and uninhibited internet. There is a good amount of drama in There, but I have seen the exact same amount in my previous online hobbies such as half-life, poker, porn, foosball, and cars. Text based communication removes inhibitions and creates extra miscommunication and this is a formula for added fun drama action. LOL You just have to take it all with a bag of salt. :) The drama is not so bad when you take a step back.

Forums
I personally avoid forums since they offer a super-size portion of daily drama. ROFL :) Forums are often the focal point of any online hobby. This is where people all meet and discuss their passion. They are kind of a social microcosm of the "tribe". Most forums follow a pattern: they are born, they start small and grow, there is a love-fest, they reach a middle stability, then the mutiny comes and all hell breaks loose, then alternative forums break-off from the main one. I can't tell you how many times I've seen this happen. :D Forums often live on, long after the game dies. TSOzone was popular with players, long after they stopped simming.

Business
Games are made to entertain us, but we often forget that they are produced to make a profit. Both Sims and There have met with this cold reality. Games are now big business with movie-sized budgets. I think it the future we are going to see some amazing games. The down side of this is that the "garage programmer" will have a hard time breaking into commercial gaming with these huge barriers to entry. I can't forget about "counter strike" though, which started as a simple programmed mod to half-life, and eventually grew to insane proportions. Number one tracked gamespy game is Half-life and the number one half-life mod is counter strike, so the highschool garage programmer still has a chance. :)

GameSpy Reviews City Of Heros
Speaking of GameSpy, Nerina sent me in their review of CoH!

GameSpy for The Old-Schoolers
Do you know how gamespy got it's start? You old-schooler do. ;) Back when I was a young lad, with my first windows PC with a gamer video card, The Micron Millennia XRU with Monster 3D Voodoo1, quake1 and quake2 were all the rage. There were quake servers here and there, but how did you find them? Gamespy started out as a client server piece of free software. You could DL it free and fire it up and use it to find all the quake servers. I think it used to track four servers...I can remember quake and hexen and I can't remember the rest. That little game spidering free client went onto become the gamespy empire. :D Now almost every game comes with client searching built in. Some license gamespy technology...like Halo has gamespy server searching built into it.

Website Popularity
Ever wonder how popular a website or fansite is? It's very difficult to guage site traffic on any site because no two counters are equal. There are a hundred ways to count hits to a website, and this makes comparisson difficult unless all sites use the same counter. My favorite counter is MasterStats. It's free and super cool. I especially dig it because my old porn bud "KidSlick" invented it. ;) If you ever want to toss a counter on your website, give it a try. There are a couple other ways to get a rough gauge of websites popularity; the two I know of are Alexa and Link Popularity checker. The most popular There site that I can find seems to be Life In There. It's been around for a long time and is always popular.

Frisky Second Life
Oh My...SL Erotica is dedicated to the sexy side of second life. :)

What's Next For Twiddler
In terms of blogging, I am probably going to make about 60 posts on the site for my stock market book. This is to help promote it in the search engines. In terms of gaming, right now I am enjoying City of Heros. I have pre-orders in for Sims2, Doom3, and Half-life2. I'll most likely buy GuildWars or World of Warcraft, depending which hits the market first. I know I like guildwars so I think I would lean that way if I had to choose. I miss half-life and there is an 80% chance that I will run a full bore half-life server on 66.146.50.100. My old one was called "Cucamonga Chunk O Phlegm" and I'll call the HL2 one that as well. LOL I used to live in cucamonga so I like that name and my buddy Gene-La-Machine and I just used to say "chunk of phlegm" a lot for no good reason. LOL Here are some of my old marketing spams to Usenet, back in the day. Ohhh! I don't know if I've ever showed you some of my smaller gamer sites from the past. here is High Ping Bastards. Here is the classic Twid 36 Half-Life Jumps. The skirts cannot resist an old-dude in pink.

There was one gamer project I gave up on that I might try one last time; I had worked for two years with two programmers to try and make the greatest first person shooter stats site. The site was to be called Taunt.com (don't go there now or you will get the same boob in your eye as lips.com). Craig the Programmer had his php nimble spiders querying the 30,000 half-life servers, once every 7 minutes. The spiders hammered the database with snapshot after snapshot. My concept was to present stats like a search engine, since we are all very used to the search engine format. We hit snag after snag and the code was never better than 70%. I tossed in the towel. If HL2 is huge, I might give taunt.com one more run for the money and try and make a large gamer stats portal.

When I Was a Day One Noob

Day One Noob Twid
I was wandering around sims secrets and I found some pics that I believe were from my very first day. Nice brows you got going on. There is the spongebob buggy that was banned shortly after. Some of these names kind of look familiar. A fine helper lad game be a few tips and I think lent me a board. I was a little too shy and confused to enter the chat group. I was building up my courage. :D

Second Life Adds Thereian and Therian Names
Second Life is luring more There players; this week they added the last name Thereian. The lifetime basic membership is less than $10 and so many avies are giving it a whirl. I tried SL in early beta and didn't have much fun. It was laggy as all hell and choppy like a mofo. People tell me it's drastically different now. I am very curious about the objects and what has been scripted and so I may break down and give it a quick try. I don't think I'm gonna dive in for 6 hours a night but I may give it a test drive. I'm having too much fun with regular games right now like CoH and with Doom3, Sims2, Half-Life and GuildWars on the horizon, I think time will be limited. Hee hee. I notice that the Linden dollar gets a lot of activity on the GOM site. Here is the page for Welcome Thereians on SL.

City Of Heros First Update - New Villians
There are lots of sneak peak pics of the first update hitting CoH at Gamespy. Lots of fun new villians. Here is Twiddler the fire-blaster. Here are my weapon choices. One of the neat things about CoH is that you have to make so many choices and this creates very cutsom characters. You have to choose the weapons you want and also have to choose how you enhance them for damage, accuracy, range etc. This makes every player different from all the rest since the combinations are iinfinite. Here is the very evil 5th Column. I like to take these guys out solo, which is tricky but I pull a ninja stunt on their butts. They can't fly, and so I teleport to a high ledge or building. I then select one and TP his ass up to me, but I make sure he missed the ledge and I light him on fire as he falls 200' LOL. One he is on the ground he is down to 25% of his strength and I re-TP his butt up to me and give him the spanking. I just hang out on the ledge all day and do one at a time.

Will Harvey Begins IMVU

Bacios!
Yay! finally the Bacio is here. I've heard that the skirts show a little butt crack when hitting the turbo while wearin' the low-rise capris. :O Here are the five models. Here are the Bacios in new releases.

Porta Homes!
In that same new release link above are the Porta Homes! Weeee. Lot's of fun new stuff to play with. Here are the thumbs of the vey slick two story models.

Will Harvey, "I'm Working On Something New"
Pirate Sid tipped me off to this new Gamespot invterview with Will Harvery, cretor of There. This is an awesome interview! The interview is perhaps bad news for There Gamers where it is good news for players of online worlds. Here are some of the comments that caught my attention.

Will Harvey, " I have left the company and I?m no longer on the board. The company is following a different path than I?d like to follow..."

Will Harvey is Gone. Tom Melcher is gone. I'm guessing that Jeffrey Ventrella is long gone. I heard Levi Jones is gone? Who is left? When Tom Melcher disappeared in the middle of the night, I stated "The VCs (venture capitalists) now control the company. Once the VCs are in you know things are in rough shape and they are trying last ditch efforts to make the business work. The last bet they have is the fullfilment of the military contract and hope that the US gov continues to want to re-buy that contract yearly. My guess is that the military is testing many platforms, not just There and it might be dicey to see where this goes. Also, if you have every sold to the government, getting paid is slow. You will get paid but boy it can take some time and so cash flow would certainly be high on my list of worries.

Will Harvey, "I think if I were asked what my most significant mark on There was...that and maybe programming the hoverboat, which has truly delightful vehicle physics."

I thought it was cool that he dug the hover boat so much :)

Will Harvey, "There nailed the business model. Selling virtual items for real money is absolutely the way to go."

I disagree with Mr. Harvey here. Virtual goods is "one" way of making money. It's a difficult way since you have to have large scale participation. This model works for ebay for example, but it's not the only business model that works. For example, with 100,000 subscribers, CoH is printing money at $20 a month. That is $24 million a year. Now let's say you try and make this with a 5% fee on every transaction. Let's keep it at 100,000 players. 5% of what = $20? 20/.05 = $400. Bullshit will you ever get 100,000 people buying $400 worth of goods, each and every month. I do think the virtual model can work, personally I would take the subscription model 99 times out of 100 first. I continue to think this is one of the reasons There Inc stuggled...they tested and were moderately successful with three billing models, but the one that makes the big cash needs the most focus. Hybrid systems can work as well. You could make a "There" with no subscription fee BUT have houses available for everyone and have rent at $T40,000 a month = $20. That might be one sneaky way to do subscription. ;)

And the last thing said was that he was working on something new but not talking about it. Read this inteview!

It's rare to find me in-world lately, but even more rare to find me in a Karuna chat circle! LOL I was testing a new Spades object when Cytra pulled the old "I have to show you my new outfit" trick and summoned me into the chat-fest. Nerina sent in this latest story on There.

Here is a sad quote from that story:
"Key members of There's launch team--including the oft-quoted Tom Melcher, Will Harvey, and Amy Jo Kim--are either long gone from the project or remain on the masthead in name only."

CoH Video Testing
I decided to try Fraps on CoH last night. I made a two minute movie. Starley and I and two others were teamed up against some bad lads and near the end of a mission. The fraps video was 200mb. I used the windows media encoder to make it the smalled size and reduced it to 6mb! It's a little blurry. I also decided to run it through honestech video editor and it was much clearer at the small size but also 30mb. Here is the small 6mb movie. This is some of he action fun you can have in City Of Heros.

Linden Labs Makes A Move

Linden Labs Makes A Move
A few days back I suggested that if There Inc decides to wind down the consumer game division, some money could be found striking a deal with Maxis or Linden Labs. It could be a Win Win Win. There Inc would win by making a little unexpected revenue, Linden wins with a new client, players win with a new place to go and a super deal at one of those sites. The window of opportunity for this has already closed! :) Linden has taken the ball into their own hands and said "come here Thereians and we will cut you a phat deal." Kyau was the first to send me to the Second Life There page. I played second life in beta and it's a cool game. It's closer to There than it is Sims. What game you like best is subjective. I personally like the games in this order: There, Sims Online, Second Life. That's just me. Each game is different and has their own cool uniqueness.

Ventrella's Cafe
Ever wonder about Ventrella's cafe? I found Leo's old article on TechTV and it states:

"Six years in the making, There is the brainchild of Will Harvey, a Stanford computer science Ph.D. and game developer, and Jeffrey Ventrella, an expert on artificial life from MIT's Media Lab."

I had heard of Will Harvey but had not heard of mr Ventrella. Michael Wilson was the lad that was a big player at ebay. Here is a scetch.

Shameless Plug For My New Book!
In january I decided I wanted to write a book. It was more about the challenge of writing a book, then the business of selling one and making some coin. I decided to try self publishing with iUniverse. Anywone can publish their onw book their, and costs run between $500 and $1,500 depending on how many optional featured you choose. I've always said "it's easy to make a website; it's hard to get traffic to it" and the same is true for writing, "it's easy to write a book; it's hard to sell it." LOL :) It was a lot of fun and quite a learning experience. I made tons of mistakes along the way. From idea to store shelf in four months! Woo Hooo. My book just hit Amazon. I see that iUniverse even has it at the canadian store.

The book is basically how I trade stocks and invest. If you trade stocks or your thinking about an IRA, you might enjoy it. I use three or four internet sites to screen for stocks. My favorites are MSN Investor, BigCharts, and StockCharts.

If you are new to investing and retirement planning, you might enjoy the Motley Fools book or the Wealthy Barber first.

When you self-publish, everything is on your shoulders in terms of promotion. I'm not going to go too crazy since this is more of a fun hobby for me and I don't think I'll sell 17 copies LOL, but I have a three prong sales approach plan.

1) Press Release
I'm not sure if this will work but I will do a press release to various journalist through some of the internet PR sites like PRweb.

2) Google Ads
I'll most like try a couple hundred dollars in google ads, aimed at amazon. I tend to think these will lose money but I want to find out the conversion rate. Here is why it will be difficult mathematically...google clicks are minimum 5 cents. I aim that to amazon and try to sell a book. The book is $15 and I would be paid 5% from iuniverse. oopsy, nice math error here earlier...correcting. This means I need to get 1 sale in 30 clicks to break even. This is impossible. I can actually improve on this because...if I use the amazon affiliate program, they pay me too...say 5%. Now that is 1:60. (essentially still impossible) Even losing money, I will get a figure of how many clicks I need to make one sale on average. You can buy your own book at iuniverse and sell them yourself you can make more than 5%. I think you can make $5-$10 depending on quantity. I can use the amazon math to determine if it would be worthwhile attempting to sell from home. Even at $10 profit you are looking at 1/200. I think I just talked myself out of buying google ads. hahaha :)

3) Blog
You know I love blogging. I might do a few blog posts to get the book and stock terms into the search engine. I have a generic site laid out and will finish it off this week. If you use MT and want my clean default templates, here they are.

It took me a lot of years to develop my trading strategy. I've read close to 100 books on the subject. Here is an old list I used to post to usenet 100 years ago. I need to update it sometime. LOL I made huge coin in the dot com boob, and I lost huge coin in the dot com bust. Ahh the lessons of life eh. :) In the last three years, I am up over 20% per year on average. This year I am up 16.4% and beating all four indexes. I do not day trade, I trade long term. I usually make less than 15 trades in a year. I generally hold 8-12 stocks at one time.

Game Engines

There is not the only game embracing internal advertising. This trend continues to pick up steam. Article

Sims2 Skins
There are only a handful of sites, but Sim2 skins are going to get big - fast. One of the great things that There has given the gamer community is...and incredible group of skilled designers. So many of us learnt to paint or build because of There, while other got even better at the craft. This will spill into new games as they come out. Here is a cute Sims2 skin site I found. It's foreign but pretty. TaiTai's. I never got too into Sims1, but I will buy Sims2. I was chatting with Starley yesterday and she was already deep into the Sims2 skinning land. We both decided to grab a couple of domain names, just in case. LOL Over at Dotster, Starley grabbed celestialstudio.net and simstudios.com, and I grabbed friskysims.com. :) The Sims2 skins are massive, allowing deep detail.

Gamer Engines
3D gamer engines are available to programmers and game developers. These range from noob to ninja pro-level, $0 to $250,000. Cute engine I believe is domation. Torque engine is $100 and $395 commercial license. Quake1 and Quake2 are open source licensing. You can license one of three Unreal engines. The king of them all is the Quake3 engine and is $250,000. Why re-invent the wheel? This is why I always question There's plan to design networking code from scratch. It cost millions and it takes years to get rid of lag. 250 large is not a high price to pay for serious code. One you have the engine, you then build your world or game around that. I also questioned Sims for not going this route. They continually struggled with networking code. id software and others have been doing it for years. Sure you might have to modify the game slightly, but that does ot change the overall flavor. For example, in Sims Online, if you used a pre-existing engine, you might have to make each house one server or maybe limit 2-3 houses per server. You might say "that will take 1,000 servers!" Yes it might, but that is how google is built and cheap strong servers are $500 now. You have 1000 servers for $500k and that is a lot cheaper than what Maxis and There spent on their server farms I bet. And lag would be hella less.

If You Build It, They Will Not Come
I've seen this problem time and time again with both internet and brick and mortar businesses -> falling in love with the product. There Inc. was in love with the concept of an advanced virtual world. There is a technical masterpiece. So what? I have never ever never ever seen a product sell itself. I don't care how good it is, a product, or content, never sells itself. You have to put at least half your effort into advertising. In terms of success, you will always make more money with a weak product that has great advertising compared to a great product with weak advertising.

If you build it, they will not come. If you build a better mouse trap, they will not beat a path to your door. Back in the porn days, new webmasters would come up to me and the conversation would always go just like this:

dude: "Twid! I have got this new site and Oh man! We have got the greatest content ever! We have 6' tall buxom blonde sweedish co-eds wearing santa clause suits!"
twid: "dude, that is some ultra rare badass content...so what?"
dude: "what do you mean 'so what'?"
twid: "where are you going to get traffic? where are you going to get hits? how many hits does your site get a day?"
dude: "huh? None of that matters because Twid! We have got the greatest content ever! We have 6' tall buxom blonde sweedish co-eds wearing santa clause suits!"

These new webmasters were always under the false impression that "content" drove sales. If you build it, they will NOT come. You have to hit people over the head with a frypan to get them to your site. These webmasters would get 15 hits a day and you could hear the crickets chirping. I used to say that I knew a lot of poor photoshop experts and new a lot of rich search engine spammers.

Yes, you need a good product or service, but after that, its ALL advertising and marketing. There Inc. was 90% focused on the "product" and 10% focused on the "selling".

There's Website
I hate flash. I dislike java and javascript. xml is ok but I still prefer sites without it. There Inc. loves all three of these things and all three cause excessive website grief. Getting in bed with flash was a huge mistake. Flash gimped There from the word go. All the flash on There Inc's interface could be replaced with simple code, and so many things would be more stable. Flash is cool. Flash is great for cartooning. Flash has no business on a commercial money making website. Flash banners rarely outclick regular banner. I've tested hundreds, even thousands of banners online and flash never wins. Text links always outperform java rollover links. And regular text links always always always outpe
