Will Harvey, "I'm Working On Something New"
Pirate Sid tipped me off to this new Gamespot invterview with Will Harvery, cretor of There. This is an awesome interview! The interview is perhaps bad news for There Gamers where it is good news for players of online worlds. Here are some of the comments that caught my attention.
Will Harvey, " I have left the company and I?m no longer on the board. The company is following a different path than I?d like to follow..."
Will Harvey is Gone. Tom Melcher is gone. I'm guessing that Jeffrey Ventrella is long gone. I heard Levi Jones is gone? Who is left? When Tom Melcher disappeared in the middle of the night, I stated "The VCs (venture capitalists) now control the company. Once the VCs are in you know things are in rough shape and they are trying last ditch efforts to make the business work. The last bet they have is the fullfilment of the military contract and hope that the US gov continues to want to re-buy that contract yearly. My guess is that the military is testing many platforms, not just There and it might be dicey to see where this goes. Also, if you have every sold to the government, getting paid is slow. You will get paid but boy it can take some time and so cash flow would certainly be high on my list of worries.
Will Harvey, "I think if I were asked what my most significant mark on There was...that and maybe programming the hoverboat, which has truly delightful vehicle physics."
I thought it was cool that he dug the hover boat so much :)
Will Harvey, "There nailed the business model. Selling virtual items for real money is absolutely the way to go."
I disagree with Mr. Harvey here. Virtual goods is "one" way of making money. It's a difficult way since you have to have large scale participation. This model works for ebay for example, but it's not the only business model that works. For example, with 100,000 subscribers, CoH is printing money at $20 a month. That is $24 million a year. Now let's say you try and make this with a 5% fee on every transaction. Let's keep it at 100,000 players. 5% of what = $20? 20/.05 = $400. Bullshit will you ever get 100,000 people buying $400 worth of goods, each and every month. I do think the virtual model can work, personally I would take the subscription model 99 times out of 100 first. I continue to think this is one of the reasons There Inc stuggled...they tested and were moderately successful with three billing models, but the one that makes the big cash needs the most focus. Hybrid systems can work as well. You could make a "There" with no subscription fee BUT have houses available for everyone and have rent at $T40,000 a month = $20. That might be one sneaky way to do subscription. ;)
And the last thing said was that he was working on something new but not talking about it. Read this inteview!
